I short hop with my full thumb when using Fox, and it always works for me... basically I'm wondering why other people move their thumb all the way to the right of the button... unless they scrape the bottom of Y or left of X I guess...

After some time, I suddenly couldn't use Pikmin attacks anymore. I had six Pikmin following me, but I couldn't use them. I couldn't throw out an FSmash, grab, Fair or anything. I KO'd myself and plucked a few more sprouts, and my attacks suddenly worked again.
